Mid week cod and whiting

Last week before the weather changed we headed out into the bay. A 17lb pb cod for Bob O'Connell as well as a smaller cod and a run of really good whiting. Great day!

Despite the big spring tide Silver Spray II has kept the anlgers on the cod consistantly. Tuesday was a top notch not only for the fish but because Langstone skippers Sean Heath and Glen Cairns popped down to Poole for a day out. Sean did not disappiont with a fine fish of 22lb.Poole angler and all round good egg Alex Miles answered back with 18.5lber.Two quality fish on a very enjoyable day.

Kicking off 2012 to a cracking start with one of Sam's best cod trips ever and a new boat record for Silver Spray II. 3 cod weighing in at 9lb 9oz 10lb and 30lb!!! 2 bass at 6lb and 8lb 9oz along with whiting, dogfish and congers it was quite an exciting day. Spaces available thursday and saturday if you fancy trying to beat that!!

Congratulations to Ian Hudson winner of the Silver Spray Challenge by catching a 30lb+ winter cod on Silver Spray. Ian has won a free trip to Cherbourg!

Silver Spray II cod comp

Silver Spray II also ventured out for the Poole Bay Cod Comp with ten keen anglers aboard, Skipper Sam being one of them. I decided to push out into some tide and sit it out for a bigger fish for the day. What followed was quite the opposite with 7 cod coming to the net throughout the day!!This is the most winter cod i've aboard in one day as a Skipper. Unfortunatley despite catching so many cod we were lacking in size with the biggest being 11lb 4oz for Mark palmer.None the less a cracking day had by all involved.

Poole Open Cod Comp 2011 - Silver Spray

The 2011 Poole Open Cod comp, organsied by Andy Robbins from Poole Sea Angling Centre, looked in doubt from the weather but luckily there was a window of light westerlies and we enjoyed a good day afloat. What looked like a big cod was dropped in the first hour and we had mixed luck when the next fish up was a 21lber for Shaun Miller who unfortunatley had declined to sign up for the comp. Two more cod of 10 and 8lb which were in the comp but not weighed in were topped up with the best run of whiting of 2011 including a personal best of 4lb 4oz for skipper Andy.

Wind over tide coditions didnt put the fish off today with 2 nice cod and a bonus 10lb 4oz bass for Ian Webb. One more trip[ left and then its a couple days break for Christmas.

With the wind in the northwest we have been able to get back on track and take Silver Spray II to sea for the first time.All the anglers and skipper are very pleased with her performance. The first fish to grace her landing net was Alex Miles 20lb cod, one of two he had that day. Looking fotrward to many more successful trips aboard our new boat!!

Finally we are able to get out two days on the trot again but the winds don't quite let up with a stiff northwesterly both days.Sunday seemed to fish the better of the two with congers, plenty of whiting, 2 cod, a 12lb spurdog and a bonus 8.5lb bass for the skipper. A good day had by all, can't wait to get out there and try again.

A small break in the weather allowed us to get out saturday before more bad weather sets in. Lots of fish waiting for our baits with spotted ray conger cod whiting and the usual doggies and pouts. The surprise came in the form of a shoal of bass working on sprats. Although they were only small fish we had around 30 on feathers and it was very good sport

Silver Spray ll launched

Our new boat Silver Spray ll was launched last week. She has completed sea trials and will be moved to Poole on Tuesday. Showing an impressive turn of speed and featuring a walk round wheelhouse for more fishing space we feel she will be a great boat for angling.

Our existing boat Silver Spray is still around and will be used for two boat trips over the Christmas period. We are planning to use her for a mixture of survey work and angling trips in 2012. If you need a 2 baot charter please give us a call.

Despite easterly winds this weekend the cod were still biting even if other fish were a little quiet. Plenty of dogfish of course to keep rod tips twitching, the winning formula seemed to be bigger baits with the 23.5lber falling to a 7 squid cocktail.

British Cod Championships 2011

This year the British Cod championships were fished south of the needles on both days. We manged 6 fish with 2 over 20lb. The biggest fish was little over 25lb each day and the top boat had 10 fish over the 2 days. the winning angler had 6 fish totalling over 70lb.

Winter codding is off to an impressive start!! With a break in the weather Skipper Sam took a few keen anglers out for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon with positive results. Among the masses of doggies angler Dave Lynes managed to pluck out a spotted ray, a bass and the first of the seasons winter cod weighing in at 24lb4oz. Setting the bar ncie and high for the rest of the season!

The last offshore trip of the year had some awesome weather and plenty more congers for Stuart Cross and his lads, as ytou can see from the photo below you couldn't put a bait down without a conger gulping it down. Another awesome trip down on the flatties. The aweful weather brought out just the better fish all the brill being over 4lb and some good sized turbot too. The plaice fishing was cut short at the end of the day by increasing winds but a good day all round none the less.

We managed to squeeze one more flatfish trip in beofre the bad weather set in. Conditions were certainly less than favourable by the end of the day (plaice fishing in 8 foot seas) but we managed equal numbers of turbot brill and plaice with 8 of each. First fish aboard was a nice surprise in the form of a 3.75lb tub gurnard for Bob O'Connell. John Knight was top angler with 5 flats incluyding a 7lb brill and a 11.5lb turbot. Still a few spaces left on our last trip down to the banks in just over a weeks time!

Three days on a nice spring tide with better weather than i think i have ever seen at this time of year before and thankfully the bass have stayed on a little later this year. Plenty of nice bass on live eels, mackerel and lures combined with rays smoothound pollack and more tope than i could count at anchor. What a magic weekends fishing!!

Another stomping day on the flats down the shambles bank off weymouth. Plenty of good sized turbot along with 4 brill meant we lost count after a while. Also a few plaice over the slack on the mussell beds up to 4lb 12oz. Top anglers on the day being Billy Delahaye and Kevan Lee with 4 and 5 flats each!!

A small neap tide and nice weather meant we could push off 30 miles in search of some big snakes. Over 35 eels came to the boat on the day with the biggest estimated at around 80-85lbs and measuring 7foot long and 24inchs around the gills.Along with the eels we had some big black bream to 4lb aswell. Although i was knackered after T-barring all those snakes it definatley one of my favourite sorts of fishing!!!

Nap tide with a far bit of westerly wind behind it today but it didn't put off the boys from Oxfordshire. A rough ride out proved to be worth it with a few congers and tonnes of pout off a submarine wreck and a dozen or so tope off a sand bank. All the fish were brought to the boat by the boys themselves with minimal help from skipper or crew so i bet there will be a few sore arms tomorrow.

We tend to do banks trips for turbot and brill this side of the channel in the Spring and Autumn. Yesterday in a break in the weather we headed out with Aylesford SAC. The lads had an excellent catch of 22 flats comprising of 3 brill, 17 turbot 1 plaice and a dab. Best brill was a new boat record of 10lb 2oz for John Platt from Southampton while best turbot was a thick fish of 10lb 4oz for Graham Smith from Pompey.

At the end of August Peter Knight brought Jamie on his first ever sea fishing trip which turned out to be a freeline trip. After getting the hang of mackerel catching his catch included a 7lb 8oz freeline bass, a 35lb conger, 12lb undulate, 3lb bream and a 25lb blonde to finish – not bad for a beginner!

Alderney 7 2011

Our first Alderney trip in August. Nice weather for a change. Good pollack and congers on the way over with a few huge bream and a single cod. A selection of turbot and brill on day 2 plus loads of gurnards. Day 3 was tops with some huge tope to 50lb, plenty of bream and big dogfish (bull huss) plus a few blondes, pollack and snakes. Day 4 and the pollack were hard work on a very small tide. A selection of congers and then more tope and huss

Last Cherbourg of the year and unfortunatley the good wetaher did not hold out with westerly force 6-7 winds hampering us on the first day.Despite the conditions the anglers still managed 8 pollack and 4 bass. The second saw lighter winds and some of the best wreck fishing i've ever seen. Fishing on the drift produced plenty of bass all between 5 and 8.5lb, along with 20 or so pollack to 15. Fishing a new wreck we have never anchored before came up trumps with 6 ling (maybe not a huge amount to some skippers but certainly the most i've had onboard in one day) 8 congers a bull huss and brief visit from a sun fish.Just to finish the day off we drifted yet another wreck and had 3 double figure cod to finish. Roll on next years 3 day Cherbourg trips!!

Wrecking off Poole August 2011

A nice day wrecking 30 miles south of Poole. Pollack on the drift several small ones and some decent size as well. A bonus was a new boat record John Dory or 7lb caught by Mark Palmer on a side winder at 3knots! Fishing at anchor produced plenty of congers to 80lb and some lovely bream to near 4lb. Great day out!

The second Cherbourg trip of the year saw better weather and some superb fishing. Exploring a few new wrecks and a few we had from the last trip, gave a wide range of species including pollack to 18lb, bass to 6lb, bream to 4lb, ling to 20lb, cod 22lb, congers and gurnard.

Just a nice day out for some reef fishing. A turbot to start followed by a small blonde then a young lad hooks the bottom which turns out to be the fish of his 12 year old life - a 25lb blonde ray. We move inshore to escape the tide and enjoy plaice, bream,doggies and loads of mackerel for the barbie. What a nice day out...

Fine weather and a neap tide and we are off 20 miles miles from Poole. First a bucket of mackerel and then on to a wreck. A dozen congers to 35lb an 3 nice bull huss to 14lb in the morning. A bonus undulate ray of 16lb as the boat swung of the wreck. Off to a sandbank and the first fish up is a 27lb blonde. As the flood tide increased a dozen tope to 30lb. Lads and crew had a great day - all fish returned for another day. Lads coming agin in September!

Our first 2 day long distance wreck trip with an overnight stop in Cherbourg. Fishing was good with cod, pollack, congers bream and bonus bass. Lads liked the Diver bar, the Hotel du Louvre and restaurant. Easy morring on the pontoons in the marina.

Alderney 5 went well with better weather being a contributing factor. With just 4 anglers onboard fishing was comfortable and allowed the skipper and crew to wet a line at times aswell. A good pick of species for the trip with the usual pollack cod and ling on the way over. 20 turbot and 5 brill for two days on the banks was spot on. The return journey was on a spring tide so we decided to head back and have a few drifts on the bass. 8 fish in the boat, 2 for each angler, and we called a trip.A very enjoyable four days all round.

At last some settled weather and a spring tide. The gannets were diving hard and there was a good number of bass to 7.5lb. Even a lively tope on a live mackerel. Put the anchor down over slack - no tope but a bonus 16lb turbot which took 2 mackerel flappers. Nothing beats the fish being hungry!

Alderney 4 completed and hats off to the die hard anglers who fished in up to 30 knots of wind nearly everyday and still managed to catch some nice flats, cod ling congers goonard and oivr 50 pollack!!Back over again next week with hopefully some nicer weather and equally good company!

Second tide on the bass with encouraging results and plenty to be going on with on slack. One day producing 10 tope 1 undulate an 8lb turbot and the largest bass so far this season of 9lb for Donald Wilson!

Alderney 3 2011

Our third trip to Alderney this year. Day 1 was a bumpy crossing with a fresh SW wind. Plenty of nice pollack on the wrecks around the hurd deep with live mackerel taking the better fish. Day 2 saw an increase in wind and tough fishing conditions. Fish of the day was a 17.5lb turbot caught by Gery Reed. Day 3 and with improving conditions the quantity of flatfish increased. A nice 5lb brill for Mark Edwars who also caught 6 turbot as well! Friday and the wind has dropped away. We are off for some codding on the way home. The cod got bigger as the day went on. a 22lber for James Craft was topped with a 25lber for Mark Edwards who then followed this up with a 32lber which is a new boat record.

Andy Ford was on board for this trip and you will be able to see the film of the trip on Sky Sports Tight Lines in 4 instalments starting in about 6 weeks time.

We have been breaming in Poole bay. As well as some lovely bream we have been averaging 10+ species per day. here are some of the pictures of our by catch from the last few days..

Bream are not in short supply at the moment. With other marks not fishing so well we managed to sneak a little furthe rout in the bay and get over 200 black bream in 3 days. The majority of fish being male tipping the scales between 1.5lb and 3lb, all females returned unharmed. A large number of other species have appeared along the way including mackerel garfish pollack bass smoothound 3 bearded rockling doggies wrasse and even 2 lobsters!!

Alderney 1 2011

Our first Alderney trip of 2011 and our first time in April. Day 1 and we visited some wrecks on the way across channel. Sam had trawled up some live sandeels so we had some excellent sport with over 50 pollack coming to the net. The further south we went the bigger the fish got with the best coming just 10 miles from Alderney. Day 2 & 3 were spent exploring the banks for turbot and brill. We had excellent numbers of fish despite the chill NE winds which certainly affected the mornings on both days. The size of the fish was smaller than we had seen later on in previous years and a high percentage were returned to grow into monsters! Day 4 and an early start to fish the wrecks on teh way back to Poole. Our fish cod of the year with the best going 22lb, a pair of 17lb ling and some medium size congers at anchor. An enjoyable start to our Alderney 2011 campaign. There are still 2 spaces in August Saturday 20 - Tuesday 23 if you would like to experience a trip like this...

Two quality days fishing, one wrecking one one inshore, as you can see a surprisingly wide range of species for a quiet time of year. Live sandeels on the drift sorted out the pollack again, with the rest of the fish/crustacia coming on cut baits at anchor. Back out wrecking again tomorrow and banks fishing monday :-)

A dream day down the shambles with 6 healthy turbot coming to the anglers. One ten minute tow produced more sandeels than any of us had ever seen in one net, with numbers estimated over 1000. This means plenty of eels for the 3 up and coming wreck trips and maybe even a 4th.

Off to mid channel. A fresh NE breeze but an improving forecast. 35 miles South and the wreck appears. The sandeels we caught on Monday are ready in the tank and soon all of the rods are well into fast diving pollack. As the morning progresses the boxes fill with fish , everyone had caught nice fish even our first time sea angler and the wind eased off - heaven!

1st trip to the Shambles

Off to the shambles bank for our first plaice and turbot trip. Beautiful morning with a light easterly wind. First job was to have a trawl for some sandeels. 20 mins and we had a good haul after some excitement hauling the net. Next on to the plaice and we had 8 fish and a couple dropped at the net in a 3 hour session. 3 fish on at once so not bad. Easterly wind was freshening to force 5 and conditions were far from ideal for plaicing. 3 drifts for turbot on the way home. 1st turbot of the year for Dan and a big fish dropped by Sam - pity. Can't wait to use teh sandeels for pollack fishing on Wednesday!!

A hard days fishing and a drastic turn in the weather as a front went through at the end of the day bringing the worst hail we have ever seen that far out to sea. A few moves managed to produce 3 rays for the day with a few fish lost half way up. Can't have it everyday.

We are pleased to announce that Silver Spray Charters has just ordered a new high speed catamaran for delivery in December 2011. Silver Spray 2 will be built by B.W. Sea Cat from Fareham in Hampshire and will feature a walk around wheelhouse for more fishing space on the drift as well as a cruise speed of 20knots. This should enable anglers to have more time fishing and less time travelling. The new boat will be approximately the same size as Silver Spray 1 and will have all of the same comforts such as a toilet and generator to run the microwave, kettle and hot water.

Silver Spray appeared on the Sky Sports Tight Lines program on friday 11th feb check it out on our facebook page or on the sky sports website. Another neap tide almost gone and the bar has been raised by John Vallis with his 28lb blonde ray, biggest so far this year.

A perfect day weather wise, even if it was a cold one, with not a breath of wind all day. With the Tight Lines crew and six keen anglers onboard: Sam Cumming, Andy Herman, Kelvin Hindmarch, Kevin Justice, Charlie Mcdowell and Alex Miles we made our way out to the sand banks about 15 mile off Poole. Fishing started slow with over 2 knots of tide running but once it started it continued all day pretty much. Everyone fishing on the day had a new personnal best with 1 undulate ray 5 blondes 6 spurdogs and a couple of congers popping up to say hello to the camera. With plenty of footage on the day we shall soon be appearing on the Tight Lines fishing program on Sky Sports. Thanks to everyone onboard for a great day all round.

Monday 3 January
Forecast was for calm conditions but it was cold and breezy. Some whiting, dogs and pout to start then a wait during the peak of the tide. 4 cod for Richard Prosser 2 of which were returned and just a slack a fine 19lber to finish.

Best days winter cod fishing this winter yet with 6 cod coming to the net including Robin Holloway's 18.5lber and Kelvin Hindmarch's 24lber coming within minutes of each other. Along with a couple of double figure thornback rays and plenty of whiting things are looking up. Strong north easterly winds over the tide lead to an extremely cold day out in the bay. But we came good in the end with 2 cod at 11 and 18lb a nice thornback ray and the usual whiting and dogfish. We have spaces coming up this week on the 3rd 4th and 5th.

You don't get many days in november where you can catch the sun but friday was one of them. Alfie Tucker and 8 friends chartered the boat for the day and stuck at it all day to produce whiting to 4lb, 2 thornback rays for wolfie and one small cod and of course plenty of pouts and dogfish.

Halfway through the winter season and the cod keep coming as Richard Proser showed yesterday with this 22lber. Congers have also taken off in numbers with over a dozen caught in one day. We have spaces next teusday on our singles cod trip. Plus be the first to get a 30LB + cod this winter and get a free trip to Cherbourg next summer.

An amazing days weather gave us a chance to jump over to freshwater bay for some more winter cod fishing. 3 cod saw the net today weighing in at 14 12 and 9lb. Inbetween cod we were kept busy with plenty of dogs, pout, 4 congers and a spotty ray. More individual cod trips coming up on the 19th and 23rd of this month.

Thanks for a great days fishing yesterday. I cant believe my luck especially as it was only my second trip out on a boat. I'm looking forward to a great dinner tonight (my wife had cooked lamb shanks last night as she didnt expect me to come home with anything). I shared the 3 cod between myself Adam and Scott so we all had something to take home and cook. Adams going to make a thai curry out of the conga so I will look forward to trying that next week. Latest catches at anchor

Fishing at anchor over the last neap tide has been good with the youngsters proving that they have got what it takes to keep up with the older anglers. Along with a good few double figure bull huss we have had the usual congers and even a surprise bass on a mackerel skeleton. Looking forward to the winter cod season in both freshwater and poole bay.

Two days fishing on the shambles certainly exceeded expectations in less than favourbale conditions with 16 brill and 13 turbot brought to the boat. The wild card for the couple of days was Dave Williamson with his new boat record 6lb 8oz tub gurnard on the slack on the second day. The fish came on a normal turbot bait and gave a very good account of itself.

Monday 4th october - an excellent day had by all aboard Silver Spray. Not only did we equal the most flatties we have had in one go on the shambles with 9 turbot and 4 brill we also had some nice black bream on the slack. After hurrendous weather on sunday I was happy to see blue skys all day long. Although fresh bait was scarce the fish seemed to be more than pleased with frozen mackerel.

Silver Spray is producing all the right species from its trips at the moment. Turbot and brill are still in there numbers on the shambles with the last trip producing turbot to 6.5lb. Bass are coming from both the inshore and offshore marks with plenty of blonde rays averaging around 18lb to 20lb coming on the slack to keep us occupied.

Freeline bass fishing is carried out by catching live mackerel and then letting them swim away from the boat with a hook in the nose. The boat drifts in shallow water around 20 feet. If you are lucky you hook a big bass and there is just you and the fish with no leads, booms or anything else to interfere with the pull of the fish. No wonder that this type of fishing appeals to salmon and trout anglers. Martin Whitefoot left the riverbank for a day and was rewarded with this fine bass of 11lb which fought like a tiger....

Freelining is carried out off the Purbacks and works best in calm conditions. The combination of the glorious scenery, slow drifts and lovely weather makes this my favorite type of trip.

Good start to a spring tide

This spring tide has got off to a cracking start with around 30 bass landed for the day, all on artificials, as live mackerel are becoming scarce. Lets hope there are more to come.

Second go at the shambles

This years second go at the Shambles bank off Portland got off to a good start with 12 flatties being cuaght on the day, 9 turbot and 3 brill. Usually expecting quantity and not quality at this time of year we were surprised to see the second turbot on board weighing in at 13lb. With a few more around the 5,6lb mark and some nice brill it really made the day

With this set of neap tides came easterly winds which is never good for the fishing. With a little sunshine for encouragement we pushed off to some wrecks and sand banks and were rewarded with plenty of tope and congers and the first hit of this seasons blonde rays.

With some unsettled weather recently we have seen a few trips cancelled but a few die-hard anglers stuck with it and proved that the fish still bite when the wind is blowing. Two days over a neap tide produced 20 congers, 15 tope, 3 undulate rays, a very nice pollack for one of my youngest anglers and a colourful squid.

The aim of big fish days is to catch big fish ie conger, ray or tope - not rocket science. We would like to say that its job well done if everyone on the boat landed a big fish. Of course if you are good or lucky then you can have your string pulled repeatedly. Day One: Wrecking our side of the channel was slow with only a few pollack in the boat and a bucket of mackerel. We finished up on a wreck about an hour from alderney with plenty of nice pollack on live mackerel on the drift. A quick anchoring session produced an 80lb+ conger for 76 year old Stanley.
Day Two: Drifting for the turbot proved a winner with around 20 fish on the boat for the day along with a 15lb blonde ray.
Day Three: Another day on the drift for the turbot produced a 17lb angler fish along with another 9 flats amongst which was an equal boat record for Alex Miles at 23lb.
Day Four: A fast and furious session on the cod on the way home produced around 60 double figure cod, 18lb ling and more congers on the slack.
All in all an amzing trip for everyone.

03/07/10 the day of the snake

With the continuing run of good weather we pushed out to some offshore wrecks for the day. Fishing started slowly with a few pollack coming aboard and finished strongly with the last fish on the drift being a whoping 18lber. Anchoring the slack up on a very small piece of ironwork we were surprised with 4 more pollack on conger baits. This was followed by the best conger session i've had onboard the Spray with around 40 snakes coming up in an hour. Unfortunatley it was so frantic that i didnt have any time for photos at anchor.

Super inshore fishing

A great days inshore fishing with the lads and teachers from nothfield school in Oxford. After a warm up in the bay on the bream, dogfish and pouts we decided to push off to an inshore wreck. After a half hours mackereling the conger rods went down and in the following hour the boys landed around 20 congers and a couple of bonus tope at last knockings. A very enjoyable day for not only the lads but the skipper and crew aswell.

The wrecks are still fishing well with good numbers of cod pollack and ling showing. Fishing at anchor has matched this with plenty of congers, tope and blonde rays.

On Monday 7th of June Silver Spray went on a wreck trip with some of its regular anglers and Mel Russ the editor of Sea Angler. After a slow start we anchoring a wreck in deep water and the fishing got off to a good start with over 20 snakes coming over the slack. The biggest of which fell to Mel at around 80lb. We started to fish on the drift with pollack into the double figures. On the way back we went in search of cod. As luck would have it we found them not long after with half a dozen fish to 20lb coming aboard. This trip will make the main feature in the boat angler section of the 456th Sea Angler issue which will be on sale from the 5th august.
